Having graduated from University myself in what seems like decades ago now, I remember the excitement, optimism and slight anxiety as to the next step in life. The world seems your oyster, opportunity is just round the corner yet somehow just out of reach. Getting credit for your work can be hard when you're a student and as soon as you leave to enter the real world every job you look at requires experience; but how do you get experience without a job? The catch 22 every student faces at one time or another.
Thus I thought I'd do my best to give a little back and showcase some students whose work caught my eye. This is the first of my student spotlight blogs, focusing this time on talented Norwegian product design student Kaia Helene Lien Lisveen.
Exhibited at the Akershus University College Graduate Exhibition in June 2011, this cleverly designed storage system, named 'Peekaboo', ticks all the right boxes for me. The combination of smooth rounded corners, minimalist design and clever hinge system creates a piece effective in both form and function.
PEEKABOO is a piece of furniture that can hide your mess. I want to change the chest of drawers concept by breaking the traditional shape. The drawers are laminated with bamboo and the walls are painted white so that the trays are clearly presented. I wanted this furniture to stand out and have chosen a slightly different way to open the drawers.

Ragnar - Floor Lamp
The Ragnar light is another piece from Kaia I particularly liked. As with all lights the design really comes to life in the dark. The ability to manipulate light, transforming the structure to achieve just the right feel for your room is an idea put to great use in this design.
Ragnar is a floor lamp made in laminated wood. The idea behind this lamp is that you can turn each box around and decide how much light you want to come out and choose the shape of the lamp. Ragnar is a male name in Norway and he got his name because he actually looks like a Ragnar. He is just about a meter tall and can be used in the living room as well as in the hallway. I found my inspiration from repetitions that we have around us all the time.
